History Selce - Historical and Cultural Information about Selce
The oldest traces of human habitat dating back to prehistoric times, on the hill of St. Juraj. Findings discovered in this region evidence that the settlement existed here from the 2nd century, where used to be a villa rustica. This way was passing the main Roman road that linked northern part of Italy with Dalmatia. Croatian tribes came along those roads at the end of 6th century and inhabited here, taking some Roman skills such as growing grapes, and during the Middle Ages, a place was known for good vineyards.

From the 13th century the whole area comes into possession of the family Frankopan, and builds into a significant trading port. From 1572 the entire property of vinodol was taken by knights Zrinski that encouraged trade by land and sea, so the place continued to develop, and residents were dealing with fishing, olive oil, wine, tuna shipping, while in the 19 century were coming into the port also several large sailing ships carrying miscellaneous merchandise.
